Fetal Alcohol Sprectrum Disorder Program

FAS and FAE are birth defects caused by the consumption of alcohol during pregnancy. Deer Lake Health Services has identified this issue as an concern for new mothers and has adopted to implement this program to address the needs of the community. FASD program has been in placed for many years under other named such as FAS , FASE and ECD. This program is considered relatively new in our community. The program offers services similar to those program such as Canadian Prenatal Nutrition Program and Health Babies and Health Children ( NAN ).

  • Public Education and Awareness
  • Information sessions
  • Social gatherings
  • Referrals to outside and band based services

    Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) is a medical diagnosis referring to a specific cluster of anomalies associated with the use of alcohol during pregnancy.

    Fetal Alcohol Effects (FAE) is a term used to describe the presence of some, but not all, FAS characteristics when prenatal exposure to alcohol has been confirmed (also used occasionally when use is uncertain).
